The Giver Summary

The Giver novel from Lois lowrey show about 11years old boy called Jonas who live in the big community which seemed as a peacfeul and perfect place to live, there are no crime, no dispute everything is ordered with well. Everything is look awesome and pleasing, but actually is just pseudo. In Jonas community actually there no colour, no feeling , no joy, sex , music, climate, everything is totally same! which being different is totally shameful in this community. Human do not have the privilage to choose what they want and what they life would be by themselves, every choice is lies on The Elders hand such as spouse, Job, childern,everything will be choosen by The Elder. Give a birth and being a mother is a honourable job for women in this world, but not in this community. Being a mother or they call it with birthmother, is judged as one of the job that have lower value and make them as a labor for the rest of their lives after give birth 3 times. The value of life is not a big deal in this community , they will release everyone who break the rules third times, people who make dispute or complication, old people , the weakest infant, the twins baby, or someone who want  to express their individuality with no mercy!. Unfortunately the citizen in that community know the fact of release mean they will be sent in elsewhere, instead they will get injected with deadly injection and throw it like a rubbish .

In short Jonas live with his family , a father who really like surrounding himself to a childern and working in nurturer department,also his intelegent mother who working in Department of Justice , and his cute 8 years old sister called lily that very talk active girl and like to tell story to her family. Actually the reason why Jonas only have 4family member because of his community has the unique rule that allow in one family there are only have 4memnber one female, male and two childern. And in fine every December, Jonas’s community have huge unique ceremony to celebrate the new age of the childern in the community until they reach 12 years old. They will be given a job or they called it as assignment with the further training once in their life. Jonas also will turn in 12 years old on this December, but he still do not have idea or vision what kind of assignment that he will get and make him worry and afraid about his future. Jonas think he is so different with his friend that seem very sure what kind of field that they will get as their assignment.  Actually, Jonas is different than the other community member but he do not realize it. The sign that make Jonas different than other community members is, he has high quality too see beyond. He begin to see a colour at glimpse but he do not realize it was a colour, because the sameness make him do not know what is colour look a like.

Day after day pass and the day of big ceremony come, Jonas patiently wait his turn to receive an assigment . All of Jonas’s friend begin get their assignment , Doctor, Birthmother, Nurturer, Engineereing, Pilot, Director of Recreation, Instructor, Caretaker of the old, but the most confusing situation that make lot of people and Jonas surprised is the chief elders passed jonas turned. The chief put Jonas turn in the last and explain to all of the community that jonas has been selected as the next Receiver of memory, one of the most honourable and important assignment in that community because of his high quality lntelligence, intergrity,courage that make him possible to be the Receiver. At the first time, Jonas feel shocked,afraid and worry with the new assignment  that he got, but he still have to take the assignment for the community future.

He begin follow his training that located in the annex building with the old man who being the receiver for a long time, and jonas called him The Giver. On the begining in his training as the receiver , the giver explain about what is receiver of memories assignment look a like, and begin to transfer the good memories such as how it feel to touch snow and play the sled on the snow hill, feel the sunshine, which Jonas can not found it on his community because of the sameness.

Day by day jonas receive lot of good memories with well,  even he mangaged to see the colour perfectly. Nedless to say the memoreise is not only the good one , but there also lot of bad memories which the giver have to transfer it to Jonas. At first The Giver feel worry and afraid  if he would make the same mistake like 10years ago with a girls called Rosemerry the new candidate of the receiver at that time that ask to be released after receive the bad memories of loneliness from a child taken from its parents. But The giver still have to transfer the bad memories and he begin trasnfer memories such as, how it feels desperate in the war, dealing the hunger, pain, and make Jonas surprised so much because of he never feel that feeling before. Jonas do not want to continue his assignment and quit being receiver after he receives those memories, but he change it because only Jonas that can handle this assignment  and make him back again to continue his training as the receiver of memory. Almost one year Jonas follow the training,and he got lot of memory either good or the bad from the Giver .

Unfortunately after all of the memories that Jonas get, it change jonas view about his community. He begin see the community member only human with the death soul. They do not know the feeling of love actually like , how is the feeling of the real pain, and how is the feeling of losing someone die, they never know about it never!. The fact that make Jonas begin angry and feel shame is, after he find out about the truth of release. He talk to the giver and plan to rebel because he want to change the community life . The giver support him so much and suggest Jonas to fake his own death and run away from the community to elsewhere which will make the memories disperse and back to the community again.

Jonas and The giver make a good escape rebelion plan, unfortunately the palnning change when Jonas find out about the fact that a baby that his father bring home and Jonas used to take care called Gabriel will be released on the next morning because Gabriel always cry all night and make a troublesome. Jonas decided to run away faster than it already planned with The Giver . He push his father’s bicycle faster far from the communiy teritory. The landscape become colourful, they can see animal, the real sun, rain, and many more. Nedless to say, The long journey make Jonas and baby Gabe run out of the food, also the climate change make it bit complicated. Jonas keep continuing  the journey and transfer good memories to make baby gabe in the good condition . Snow begin to fall and Jonas condition getting worse but he keep going. Finally with his weak body condition, Jonas force himself toward the snow hill and found the sled in the top of the hill that look like with the sled in his first memories from training. Jonas and baby gabe ride the sled downward with full of hope there is the place that held their future and their past is waiting for them. As the sled surf downward, Jonas force his eyes and begin could see a lights shining from one of the windows house with a music,although it can be just an echo .
